How do you find the expected winnings in a probability problem? I have a math problem which says if a gambler rolls 2 dice and gets a sum of 10 he wins $10, if he gets a sum of 3 he wins $20. The cost to play the game is $5. What is the expected winnings of the game?
Hi, I have a question about the 2 player gamblers ruin problem...? Say there are 2 players, A who starts with £n1 and B who starts with £n2. at each turn A wins £1 from B with a probability p, or loses £1 from B with probability q=1-p. The game is then played until one player goes bankrupt, ie X(t)=-n2 (ie B bankrupt) or X(t)=n1(A bankrupt). Wht is the probability player A wins the game? I think I know how to do it if p=q, but I'm not really sure when p doesnt equal q or even how to get those equations involving p and q. Sorry this is so long!! Any help would be muchly appreciated! What should tennis do about gambling? I say that they hire fake gamblers to find the rotten atp players? Tennis has had a problem with gambling it would appear. It is the number 3 most gambled on sport in Europe. Should tennis hire fake gamblers to approach players about gambling and keep conversations on a wire? Also, could they require players to report all transgressions. I think this system would keep the sport honest. Thoughts?
What do you think of this gambling problem? Please help.? I am 25 years old and have been a problem gambler for all of my adult life. If I have an extra buck, I will gamble with it to try and get more. I don't know what I think but I continue to lose all my income, sometimes barely paying rent. However I always get that paid. Last night I made a huge mistake that may be detrimental to my relationship with my sister, who I live with. I gambled away almost 1000 dollars on her check card without her permission. This is now that I realize that I have a real problem. I told my sister what I did and she seemed a lot more hurt than pissed. I regret doing this greatly and I am looking to get help. What are some of my options and how would you handle it if a family member did this awful act of betrayal to you?
Can any gamblers answer this? Looks at the typical problem of the 'Gamblers Lament'. A gambler plays a game with a cost of $1000 where the chances of winning are 50 percent. The return or loss is 50%. If the gambler wins and then loses he ends up with $750. If he loses first, sending him down to $500 and then wins he also ends up with $750. So he wins as often as he loses, but he's still on the fast track to the poorhouse? How do you account for this? Alejandro..you're on the right track, but thats not right. Alba, sure, your scenario makes sense. But the scenario here involves a 50% return or loss. Its not double or nothing, thats something you've added for your convenience ;) There is a very good answer by the way. Nice tries guys, and some of you were close. Win/lose and lose/win will happen only half the time. 25% chance of lose lose - end result $250. 25% win win - end result $2250 Add up the losses - 750 + 250 + 250 = $1250 = amount when you win then win = $1250. Each is equally likely. Overall expectancy 0. However, like the last responder mentioned you're very close to 0 and betting your entire stack each time. Random walk says you're going to hit 0 most likely when this method. Start with a bankroll of 1000 units and bet 1 unit each time and you wont move that much in the long run. Any problems with my answer?

Why do I feel guilty for moving out of my parents home? My mom was a gambling addict - a problem gambler.? I decided not to return to live with my parents after college because I didn't want to live with my mom's gambling behavior. For most of my childhood, she'd take me to casinos and leave me there while she gambled - sometimes overnight. My dad enjoyed gambling as well but not to her extent. She'd make excuses about trying to win money to pay for my college tuition. As I got older, I told her I hated going but I accepted her temptations and lies about the money she'd win. She is now in high amounts of credit card debt but some debt are parent loans she took out for my education. My mother has a full-time job but she is living beyond her means. I've told her this but she is unwilling to change her situation to make it better for her. My mother said she has no hope for the future as I am not helping her situation. I help pay the loans she took for me. She told me she has not returned to gamble. My mom is in good credit standing but I feel guilty for not returning home. I am 22

Grammar Check: Sometimes, all gamblers need is a lifeline.? This has been driving me nuts all day. I saw this on a poster and don't remember enough of grammar rules to be able to pick this apart. "Sometimes, all gamblers need is a lifeline." To me, [subject - gamblers] [verb - need] [verb - is][noun-lifeline] is odd because "need" is verb and then is followed by another verb "is" . These two work for me: all gamblers need a lifeline [noun]][verb][noun] and what all gamblers need is a lifeline [noun "what all gamblers need"][verb "is"][noun "a lifeline"] I think the problem might have something to do with matching singular/plural subjects with singular/plural verbs... Any help you can give is appreciated. While a response from anyone is great, I would really appreciate commentary that explains what is wrong and why it is wrong and what needs to be done to fix it. To clarify, this sentence was not authored by me. In no way am I trying to offer social commentary on gambling. It was on a poster that had a gambling help line.

I am uncertain how I can solve this problem??? I have been struggling with a problem. I go to the Casino once a month and lose money and just can't seem to stop. I enjoy the winning part of it , but not the losing part. I attended a few Gambler's Anonymous meeting and got so scared and so negative I decide to leave. The people there are really, really into it and very bad sounding people with very bad problems. I want to know how to solve this problem. I thought perhaps I would start a cleaning business and clean apts in my spare time to start to gain back some money from what I have been losing. I want to get myself out of this mess. Maybe there is some kind of hidden subconscious issue that remains unsolved in my mind.Has anyone got a sensible cure for this problem?
Is anyone willing to critique my story so far? First, you're completely lost when it comes to grammer and spelling. -x- I like your answer, and I'll heed it, Melissa, but I spell the British way, so everything might seem topsy-turvy.
Your own personal methods to over come problem gambling? Hi, well basically im 20, have had a past history of problem gambling but due to pot luck im pretty much evens (i was up heavily) lost ALL of it and some and have had a few wins since..pretty much evens...........either way nowadays i find myself with considerably more control i.e not betting $1000 in one go online just for the buzz...but i still find myself dwindling away $20-$30 here and there which I just cant afford as its quite regular..i dont particularly care if i win or lose I'm just addicted to the buzz when im bored and most of all im scared il relapse when im feeling down or something and waste $100s again..im a computer whiz so deposit limits and gamcare locks dont help me at all as i easily get round them...so i've been on the websites looked at typical self-help stuff...but I'm just wondering how do you fellow gamblers out there deal with the urges..especially mid-gamble not to keep chasing..thanks
Can someone help me with this Stats question? Older gamblers who play slot machines tend to have losses with a mean of $182 and a standard deviation of $105. The buses carry 35 gamblers per trip. The casino gives each person $50 worth of vouchers that can be converted into cash. What is the probability that if a bus filled with 35 passengers, the mean amount lost by a passenger will exceed $50. I've been having a lot of problems with this question. Can someone help me with it please?
Do Gamblers Lie about Losing? When you ask a friend who just came back from a casino how they did, do they either say that they won great or that they just did OK? Is just OK their way of avoiding admitting that they lost so much they don’t want to tell you how bad it was? Is that a sign of a problem or is it human nature?
So what do we all think of the Finnish gambler returning to Easter Road? Personally I think he will do a damned good job so far his managerial record is okay and he seems to be progressing to bigger clubs with no problem. Hibs fans on the forum what do you say to Mixu coming back?
How do I stop gambling? I dont think I have a problem because i can walk past and bookies and go weeks without gambling. However when I start I just simply cant stop, it gets to the point where I spend my entire monthly wages in one day. Other times though I can go 2-3 months without spending a penny. I really want to stop but I cant seem to. I dont want to go to somewhere like Gamblers Anon becasue my girlfriend would wonder where im going to every week. Any help? I have made an effort in trying to stop. I have cut up all my bank cards but its still so easy going in to the bank with ID and also online gambling. Richard N, I have lied about gambling and I really am ashamed of myself. Do you think its possible to do this by myself instead of relying on GA?
Help my husband is a complusive gambler I have searched for some online forums with no results!? I am unable to attend meetings in my area.. and he is in denial! From all the information I have read online.. he fits the profile! I can't discuss this with our families because they wouldn't understand. They would be put in the middle with his family hating me and mine hating him. I just need a support group to help me get through this thing...He gets angry when I try to reason with him regarding his spending problem and says I am treating him like a child. I am at my wits end. He is not only gambling with our finances, he is gambling with our relationship as well. I would like to find an anonymous forum for families of gamblers that could network at times when they need to...
Help me please with this chemistry problem!? Your friend has "gambler's disease." He bets you that his 2 mL of HCl gas will diffuse through a 100 cm length of glass tubing faster than your 2 mL of NH3 gas will pass through a 130 cm length of identical tubing. He gives you 5:1 odds that he will win. He will increase the odds to 10:1 if you come up with a foolproof means of judging the race. (i) What "foolproof means" would you use to judge this race? (ii) Who will win? Why? (iii) If you win, how much do you bet? You need $1000.00 for the weekend. I really dont know how to start this, i don't understand the question either. so how do u do this? and what's the answer? THANKS x A BILLION!
How do you deal with an alcoholic and a gambler? I am 24 years old and the "peacmaker in the house". I have a child that depends on me and we live at my parents. I do not pay rent but have problems with my parents bad habbits. My mother is a chronic casino gambler, my father is becoming like her and he is an alcoholic. They were not like that before and I tried talking to them to let them know what they are doing is not the way. They dont seem to care much for my advice. I cannot tel them what to do since "they are the parents". I fear if I move out, "all hell will brake loose" I am unhappy living there but do not know how to tell them I want to move out. I am not even sure if moving is a wise decision since it will become an extra finance that is not cheap. This is causing me much stress. Thanks all you folks who can give me good advice!
please to those who are involved in the study or treatment of addiction/brain development>? I have fought with a gambling problem, now, for three years. I've been told, by gamblers Annonymous, that I am beyond what they can do. My body was barely starting puberty when I began taking massive amounts of drugs, and alcohol. Throw in the pubescent sexual-awareness tendencies that age brings about and the party-hard philosophy of the time(70's), I've never been able to get enough pleasure. My brain is constantly trying to find ways to make me feel or not-feel. I spend every waking minute orally fixated with cigarettes, and go from coffee with 4 shots of esp. and a ton of sugar, to beer, whisky, soda, junkfood, candy, salts, spicy foods, etc. I've been doing crank for 25 years, it only calms me down, now. I've recently discovered the money isn't why I gamble, it's the adrenaline rush...which is stronger when I lose and the more I lose and the more devastating to my life it is, the bigger the rush. I know I need professional help,( no insur. tho).Is there a clinic?Anybody?

Is it okay to end your life when you are saddled with all kinds of problems from gambling addiction? I am a compulsive gambler addicted to casino poker machines for more than 13 years now. Consequently, my husband and my children left me. I had been living in a dormitory trying to find work but always I end up going back to the casino to gamble in a few minutes what took me a month to earn. Wanting to recover the millions of pesos I lost in gambling, I tried to chase my losses by playing bigger and bigger. I embezzelled company funds by erasing checks and writing pay to cash so I can encash them, I borrowed from bank using fictitious name, I defrauded many people, I stole money and things from laptop, cellphone to jewelries, I got jewelries from a store on consignment and issued unfunded checks for them and then pawned them so I can have gambling money. Now I want to die from shame, guilt and fear of being put to jail. I am held back by my fear of hell. But sometimes I think that hell is just a fiction so I might succeed in getting done my suicidal thoughts one of these days.

Did Someone Say "Gamblers Anonymous"? My mother has the same disorder as I do, Bi-Polar. My mother has a degree in nursing, near Masters. My mother has P.O.A. & Governs my money when it comes to SSDI. My mother would like to give the power to her husband, who is my Ex-Fiancee. My mothers Dr.s & care providers don't think that I am a good support system for her. They would like for me to go to G.A. groups alone in order to help her with her problem Her Psychiatrist also thinks that I should pay my mother back for blowing the money my mother gave me, which was hers. If I won any money, I ALWAYS give it to my mother, it was hers to begin with. Am I missing something here? What would you do if you were in my shoes? Dee
