I have a friend who is deployed in Iraq and owes a ton in gambling debt to bookies (over 15k). He has a major gambling problem. What would happen to him if someone found out about his addiction and debt?

- Only if he should get a letter of indebtedness will the military become involved. The other is up to the bookies.
- He would be put on a disciplanary board and probably be found guilty. He could lose rank, get restriction, and/or followed by a discharge. It will probably ruin his chances of re-enlistment and an honorable discharge. Edited: It doesn't matter who the money is owed too. If it substantial enough (and 15k is) and his CO finds out about it, 99% of the time he will be in some sh%t.
- From the military, you mean? Since bookies aren't "legitimate" debts, per say, I don't think the military would do anything to him. Especially if he isn't married or anything and it isn't affecting his family. The good news is he should have money to pay back his bookies when he gets home. I'd recommend he do so immediately if he likes his kneecaps and elbows the way they are. And as soon as he leaves the bookie's office, I recommend he go to a gambler's anonymous meeting.
- well most likely what they would do is send him to some gamblers annonymus and not to mention that i think that gambling in the first place is against military policy so he could end up getting in trouble for that too... now as far as whats going to happen whe those bookies catch him..well there are a different number of things they could do to him.. his best bet would be to stay in iraq as long as possible they cant get to him there..and secondly he might want to set some of that money aside to pay em back
